6 Signs Your Home Needs Rewiring

Electrical

Electrical wiring doesn't last forever. In older homes especially, wiring can wear out, become overloaded or simply not keep up with today's appliances. Here are six warning signs worth acting on.

6 warning signs to look out for

  1. Your circuit breaker trips often

An occasional trip is normal. But if your breaker or residual current device trips regularly, it can point to overloaded circuits, faulty wiring or a failing appliance.

  2. Lights flicker or dim

Lights that flicker or dim when an appliance switches on can be a sign of loose connections or circuits carrying more load than they were designed for.

  3. Switches or power points feel warm

Switches and sockets should never feel warm to the touch. Heat can signal loose wiring or overloading, and should be checked promptly.

  4. You notice burning smells or scorch marks

A burning smell, or brown or black marks around power points, is a serious warning sign. Stop using that point and get it checked right away.

  5. You rely heavily on extension cords and adaptors

If you're constantly plugging multiple appliances into adaptors, your home probably doesn't have enough power points for how you live today. Adding properly installed points is safer.

  6. Your home's wiring is decades old

Older wiring may not be designed for modern loads such as air-conditioners, water heaters and kitchen appliances. If you're renovating or haven't had your wiring checked in years, a professional inspection is a good idea.
